Six Dursley AC members travelled to the Lake District to take part in The  Saunders Lakeland Marathon.  This is a two day mountain navigation event open to teams of two. Teams navigate between checkpoints, visiting them in a given order. The first day finishes at a mid-way campsite (a field with portaloos!)-lucky lucky lucky b*St**ds in my day all we had was a small brown paper bag!!!! Ed.
Competitors must carry their own food, water, tent etc and safety equipment. You also need to be competent in the use of map and compass in the mountains. This year’s Saunders was a real test of all these skills – it is rare to get two successive days of such poor weather and visibility.
The event started at St. Johns in the Vale and headed east into the Helvelyn range. Day 1 distance is 19.6 km (measured as a straight line distance) and 1425 m climb with 7 checkpoints. Fred Yearsley and Richard Bromley had a very good run to finish back on 7 hr 4 min 17 sec, navigating well in mist and heavy rain showers. Trevor Lewis and Graeme Hawkins finished in 7 hr 16 min 39 sec, another good effort considering Trevor was the only navigator as Graeme’s efforts were useless, just managing to whinge about the weather, mountains and his blisters! Tim George and Dean Thornton finished just behind in 7 hr 19 min 28 sec.
Day 2 distance was 15.3 km and 900 m climb with 8 checkpoints from the overnight camp back to the start. Lewis and Hawkins had a great run with good navigation and good whinging, finishing in 4.09.19. George and Thornton 4.14.21. Yearsley and Bromley 4.26.02.
Overall Dursley performed extremely well, competing against runners who regularly take part in this sort of event. The Dursley teams finished  within 8 mins of each other after 11 hours of running. Lewis and Hawkins finished in 30th place in 11.25.58, but also winning the Vet category. Yearsley and Bromley were just behind in 31st place in 11.30.19 and 2nd in the Vet category. George and Thornton were 34th in 11.33.49.

Ray Williams,Rob Woodward, and Andy Kilby, took on the challenge of the Lanzarote Ironman, for most of us standing for 15 hours is tiring enough! to complete a 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile cycle ride and finish with a 26 mile marathon is a breathtaking acheivement.

It alll started at 7 in the morning when our trio leapt into the Atlantic, whist the training at Dursley Pool put them in good stead, just keeping their heads above water in the melee of the start was a bonus. Rob came out of the water first in 1 hour 11 minutes closely followed by Ray and Andy.

Ray managed to build a 30 minute lead on Rob over the bike section, battling against a fierce wind and a lack of coca cola at one refueling station, Andy was a further 30 minutes behind.

The marathon was a gruelling finish, the cool evening air makiing it slightly more bearable. Ray finished in a fantastic 13 and a half hours, with Andy digging deep to catch Rob, both crossing the line in 15 Hours.

After a well earned rest next stop for the intrepid three is Cotswold Water park for a duathaon, a walk in the park in comparaison!

The 2008 Cotswold Way Relay took place on Saturday 28th June. Now in it’s 17th year this race starts at Chipping Campden at 7 a.m and finishes at Bath Abbey in the early evening. The route is split into 10 stages varying in length and ascent, using the waymarked route of the Cotswold Way – over 90% off-road. The route is not marshalled so it is important to recce the route beforehand to prevent getting lost. 65 teams of ten entered this year. Dursley AC had two teams entered – a veteran team and a mixed team.
The veteran team performed well finishing in 4th place and the mixed team also did well finishing 11th place, with Garry Hughes starring, winning stage 5 in a new stage record time to add to his records for stages 6 and 8.
